Slyne with Hest 2 vs Coppull United FC 3 - Saturday 18th September 2021

West Lancashire Premier Division

Coppull United FC travelled to Slyne with Hest looking to leapfrog their opponents in the league table with a win.

Coppull started with Joe Leather in goal, a back 4 of Cam Culshaw, Dave Parker, Jack Wright and Ben Morris. In midfield it was Jonty Mattock, Adam Pickstock and Nathan Bibby in central midfield and they were flanked by Jordan Bentham on the right and Callum Sheehan on the left. Up top was the in-form Nat Lindley. The substitutes bench contained Jack Ramshaw, Alessio Degrassi, Jimmy Hamer, Cam Murphy and Sam Bolton.

Coppull started the game off second best with Slyne taking the early initiative. It was clear to see that they had a couple of useful forward players who were very mobile and tricky and tested Joe Leather from distance on a couple of occasions. As the half progressed however, Coppull seemed to weather the storm and came into their own playing some nice football. Bentham had a volley from outside the area that just went wide, Lindley hit a post following good work from Jonty and Bibby down the left and Dave Parker came close with a header from a Bibby free kick. When the half time whistle blew it was 0-0 with Coppull in the ascendency.

As the second half began Coppull continued where they left off. A great through ball from Jonty found Lindley who had ran between the two centre halves before lobbing the ball over the stranded Slyne goalkeeper to make it 0-1 to Coppull. Slyne struck back almost immediately with a free kick from 20 yards which left Leather flat footed and was stroked home to the keepers left to bring the game level at 1 a-piece. Coppull introduced a couple of substitutes to try and impact the game with Alessio Degrassi and Jimmy Hamer entering the field of play. It was Alessio who was to thank for Coppull’s second goal as he ran in behind the Slyne full back following a Lindley through ball and was abruptly brought down in the penalty area and the referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot! Up stepped Jordan Bentham to convert the spot kick confidently and help regain Coppull’s lead. Similar to the last time however, Coppull failed to hold onto their lead for long as some questionable defending led to the Slyne number 9 slaloming his way past a couple of challenges before slotting the ball past Joe in the Coppull goal to equalise yet again.

Coppull pushed forward for a winner and Alessio was played clean through one on one with the keeper however his shot lacked power and conviction as it was easily saved by the keeper. He managed to avenge this however as he started a break in the Slyne half before swapping passes with Jonty and then hitting a low hard shot from 20 yards into the Slyne net giving the goalkeeper no chance and sending the whole Coppull squad and management team into raptures. With little time left on the clock Slyne tried to find a third goal to tie the match again however it wasn’t to be and Coppull returned home with another three points.

Next week sees a local derby against Euxton Villa in the LFA Shield – 2pm kick off.
