West Lancashire Premier Division
Coppull United FC welcomed table-topping local rivals to Euxton Villa to Blainscough Park hoping to build on back-to-back wins however team selection was once again hindered due to injuries, holidays and work commitments. Only two players from the starting eleven the previous Saturday where to take to the field against Euxton!
Coppull started with Mikey Williams in goal, a back 4 of Dylan Bennett, Dave Parker, Cam Murphy and Nathan Bibby. In midfield it was Jonty Mattock, Adam Pickstock and Martin Kershaw in central midfield and they were flanked by Jack Ramshaw on the right and Jordan Bentham on the left. Up top was Reserves captain, Scott Hendy. The substitutes bench contained Jay Briody, Chris Holt, Sam Bolton, Cam Culshaw and new signing Callum Sheehan.
The first half started poorly from a Coppull United perspective with Euxton finding their feet early on in the game and they immediately started to knock the ball around well. Coppull looked well off the pace and were struggling to match the midfield runs coming from Euxton and ultimately paid the price when a well worked move down the left from Euxton resulted in Cam Murphy deflecting the ball into his own goal. One nil became two nil when a similar move resulted in Pat Bibby beating Dylan Bennett and his centre was unfortunately converted once again into his own net by the luckless Cam Murphy. Coppull’s poor half could have been made that little bit better when Scott Hendy found Jack Ramshaw, who had made a great forward run. When found one on one with the goalkeeper however Ramshaw’s shot was easily read by the goalkeeper and Euxton went in at half time 2-nil up.
After a few choice words at half time and a couple of substitions with Cam Culshaw replacing Dylan Bennett and Jay Briody replacing Martin Kershaw, Coppull returned to the pitch looking to turn the game around. A much better performance second half showcased heart, determination, passion, energy and endeavour all that were lacking in the first half. Coppull pulled a goal back following a Hendy corner when Bentham rose well at the back post to head back across goal and his head was sent into the back of the Euxton net by Adam Pickstock to make it 2-1. Bentham then cut inside and it a great strike from 25 yards which was beaten away by the Euxton number one! Coppull were well in the game now and Euxton were on the back foot. They did have their moments however when a Sam Parkinson strike hit both posts and fell luckily into the keeper’s arms. Coppull continued to press forward and broke the Euxton resolve when Hendy worked wonders out wide holding off his man and his centre was met by the late arriving Jonty Mattock to make it 2-2. Callum Sheehan came on for his Coppull United debut replacing Jordan Bentham, Chris Holt replaced Jack Ramshaw and Sam Bolton replaced Jonty all of whom had put in a tremendous shift and helped turn the game around in a much improved second half performance. Both teams pushed for a late goal that would edge the game in their favour however it wasn’t to be and both had to settle for a share of the spoils!
That is the end of the midweek fixtures now and Coppull will travel to face Lytham on Saturday hoping to extend their three match unbeaten run.
